Introduction to Virtual Teams & their Lifecycle Stages

A virtual team is defined as a team in which majority of the communication required to accomplish the team's task is carried out electronically using media such as email, instant messaging, discussion boards, shared desktops, conference calls, etc. Such teams face issues that are often different from those faced by traditional face-to-face teams. In the following material, we identify the issues that virtual teams face as well as some ways in which those issues can be addressed. We have broken up the issues and solutions on the basis of different stages in the lifecycle of a virtual team. These stages are:

  • Launching the project
  • Establishing norms
  • Process optimization
  • Finishing & adjourning
